Nestled atop a hill overlooking the breathtaking landscape of Cap-à-l’Aigle in Quebec’s Charlevoix region, ABCP Architecture, led by architect Bernard Serge Gagné, presents L’Embâcle: Living in the Landscape.
This contemporary masterpiece is not just a house, it’s an immersive experience harmonizing with the surrounding forest, the majestic St. Lawrence River, the Malbaie River estuary, and Mont des Éboulements. Inspired by the natural phenomenon of ice blocks entangled by the force of the waters and then left behind as the waters recede, L’Embâcle is a stunning composition of interlocking, striated white volumes that seamlessly meld with the landscape. Its expansive windows flood the interior with natural light, while perched terraces beckon inhabitants to commune with nature.
Light and terraces: a symphony of nature and architecture
Crafted by architect Bernard Serge Gagné, L’Embâcle offers a distinctive living experience where the river and forest converge. The architectural design, resembling two ice blocks delicately stacked, provides various vantage points to admire the panorama throughout the day. From secluded night and morning spaces to daytime terraces overlooking the forest and beyond, each area offers a unique perspective of the surrounding beauty.
The heart of the home, situated between sunrise and sunset terraces on the upper level, opens up to the Charlevoix landscape. Flooded with natural light from panoramic windows, the dining room, kitchen, and living area boast bleached wood ceilings, exuding warmth and tranquility.
On the forest side, a cozy boudoir provides a serene space for relaxation. A central staircase, adorned with a replica ship as a tribute to sailors, leads to the garden level where four bright bedrooms offer intimacy amidst the lush undergrowth. Below the upper volume, a south-facing terrace features a swimming pool and whirlpool, perfect for unwinding amidst the natural beauty.
Whiteness and luminosity: embracing the northern climate
Both the exterior cladding and interior design of L’Embâcle accentuate the luminosity of the northern climate. Inside, the sloping ceiling of bleached wood fractures into three sections, allowing streaks of light to penetrate the space. White walls, soft gray concrete floors, warm oak furnishings, and contrasting black granite countertops exude elegance and comfort. Outside, the terraces are surrounded by reddish, tundra-like ground cover, seamlessly blending with the natural surroundings. Each element reflects the essence of Charlevoix’s northern nature, inviting guests to immerse themselves in relaxation and contemplation.
Comfort and sustainability: a harmony of design and functionality
Designed for energy efficiency, L’Embâcle utilizes its orientation to harness solar gains, while strategically placed windows offer natural ventilation to maintain optimal indoor temperatures. Polished concrete floors with integrated heating provide even warmth, reducing energy consumption and ensuring user comfort. A heat pump coupled with internal ventilation acts as an auxiliary heater or air conditioner as needed. Green roofing insulates the garden level and reduces rainwater runoff, while a white membrane on the main roof minimizes heat gain through reflection. Thoughtful features such as scraper grates prevent erosion and collect melted snow, enhancing both functionality and sustainability.
L’Embâcle is more than just a residence, it’s a sanctuary where architecture and nature converge to create an unforgettable experience. From its seamless integration with the landscape to its sustainable design principles, this rental home offers a harmonious blend of comfort, elegance, and immersion in the natural wonders of Charlevoix.
